At Worcester Dermatology in Worcester, MA, we pride ourselves in our ability to help our clients with all of their skin concerns. To best serve our clients, we offer both cosmetic dermatology and medical dermatology services at our dermatology clinic. Today, we’re taking a closer look at some of the medical dermatology problems we can solve to help you determine if we’re a good fit for you.
What Conditions Can Be Treated at a Dermatology Clinic?
Acne
Do you feel stressed or anxious because you never know when you will suffer from another acne outbreak? If so, your local dermatology clinic can help. Depending on the cause of your acne outbreaks, you may be a good candidate for topical medications, like antibacterial medications, antibiotic medications, or retinoid medications. Alternatively, you may be a good fit for a prescription oral medication that helps to prevent bacterial acne outbreaks. Accutane is another effective treatment method for severe acne.
Rosacea
Rosacea is a chronic condition that flares up in response to stress, diet, environmental factors, and other factors. While there is no cure, there are several effective treatment methods. In some cases, oral antibiotics are an effective treatment method. In other cases, topical antibacterial and antibiotics are a better fit. Some people even use topical products daily to reduce the likelihood of flare-ups and oral antibiotics to treat flare-ups.
We also offer other highly effective rosacea treatment methods. For example, IPL (intense pulsed light) is great for the treatment of broken blood vessels. BOTOX® Cosmetic and laser skin resurfacing can also be used to treat this condition.
Skin Cancer
Squamous cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer affecting the superficial layer of your skin. Basal cell carcinoma can be found in the middle layer of your skin. Unlike basal and squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma metastasizes often. This third and final form of skin cancer can often be identified by the acronym ABCD (asymmetry, border, color, and diameter). If you have a concerning mole, schedule an appointment and find out how we can help you if it is cancerous.
Psoriasis
We also offer a number of psoriasis treatment methods. Some people like to apply topical drugs to their problem regions, like dandruff shampoo and cortisone cream. Other people prefer phototherapy with narrow-band UVB light. Biologics and laser therapy with an XTRAC laser can also provide excellent results.
Actinic and Seborrheic Keratoses
You can also visit your local dermatology clinic in Worcester or Chelmsford, MA for the treatment of actinic or seborrheic keratoses. Actinic keratoses, otherwise known as solar keratoses, can develop into skin cancer if they are not treated in a timely manner. Treatment options include:
- Liquid nitrogen
- Aldara cream
- Solareze gel
- 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)
Seborrheic keratoses will never become cancerous. However, they can cause pain, itchiness, self-consciousness, and other problems. Liquid nitrogen can be used to remove this type of keratosis quickly and effectively if it is causing you problems.
Hyperhidrosis
Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, can also be treated at a dermatology clinic. If you don’t have time to undergo surgery and recover from it, don’t worry. We offer several non-surgical treatment methods for this frustrating condition. One of the most popular non-surgical treatment options we offer is miraDry®. This treatment harnesses the incredible power of electromagnetic energy to disable the glands in the underarms. As soon as your treatment is over, you can enjoy your results, and the results are permanent.
BOTOX® is another very popular treatment method. It involves roughly 25 neurotoxic protein injections in each underarm. Typically, results start to show after two to four days. Within 10 to 14 days, final results are realized, and they usually last six to seven months.
Moles
Most people reach adulthood with anywhere from 10 to 40 moles on their body. While they are typically benign, if they are exposed to too much UV radiation, they can become cancerous. Remember, signs that a mole will develop into melanoma include being asymmetrical, having uneven borders, being multi-colored, and having a large diameter.
Warts
Warts can go away on their own, but you may be waiting a very long time. In the meantime, they can affect self-confidence or cause moderate or severe pain if they are in an area that is covered by clothing. Topical medications are rarely effective due to the numerous layers of thick skin that need to be penetrated for effective results.
We offer cryosurgery for wart removal. You may need to come in for treatment every one to three weeks for a few months to kill the virus, preventing the growth of a new wart in the same place. In some cases, chemicals that deteriorate the wart or products that manipulate the immune system are also effective.
